Jodie Whittaker’s last appearance as the Doctor is the Doctor Who centennial special, “The Power of the Doctor,” which airs on Sunday, October 23, 2022. The full trailer for the show dropped this weekend.
The Master, played by Sacha Dhawan, kicks off the trailer with the ominous line, “Hello Doctor, welcome to the end of your existence,” before sequences of disasters and danger are seen, including building collapses, volcanic eruptions, and Daleks and Cybermen invading Earth. Finally, as the terrified Doctor cries out for Yaz, we see a glimpse of Jodie’s regeneration. This is clearly not a regeneration the 13th Doctor wants. Is the Master finally going to defeat the Doctor?
A number of returning characters, including Tegan (Janet Fielding), Ace (Sophie Aldred), Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave), and Vinder (Jacob Anderson), will assist The Doctor and Yaz (Mandip Gill) to defeat a triple threat in the Thirteenth Doctor’s final adventure. We can look forward to plenty of surprises in this special centenary show.
Dhawan, who reprises his role as The Master for the 90-minute special, recently said that he had already seen “The Power of the Doctor” and that, after watching it, he was “a blubbering mess.”
He added, “Even though the characters are so adversarial to one another, me and Jodie actually adore each other.
“Which actually makes the situations a lot more powerful and poignant than I had anticipated. Particularly during the centennial special.”
We also know that a scene between The Doctor and The Master in the episode will be fashioned from the encounter between Sherlock Holmes and Jim Moriarty in “The Reichenbach Fall” in Sherlock.
Ncuti Gatwa, the star of Sex Education, has already been announced as the new Doctor. But in 2023, Doctor Who will also celebrate its own 60th birthday with a number of special episodes when Russell T Davies rejoins the series as showrunner.
Along with Catherine Tate playing Donna, David Tennant, who portrayed the Tenth Doctor, will also make a comeback.
However, Davies isn’t saying where this journey fits into their timeline – or if they’re from another reality, or whether it’s all a dream. Next year, everything will be made abundantly clear.
